Final Project: The Debate Over Globalization
"Each day, ..., Americans buy and sell more foreign goods and services than are produced annually in more than 80
countries around the world." (Globalization101.org)
Task:
Over the next two weeks we will engage in a research project on globalization that will culminate in a sides debate (June 11th) on the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). We will be using the SUNY Levin Institute's project, Globalization101 for background information. The document attached here is a .pdf of their research. Additional data needed to support your position for the debate can be found online. You will work in a group of four and must be prepared to argue for or against the trade deal.
Project Timeline:
Day 1: May 22 - Read the essay(handout), The Debate over Globalization, and answer the 10 questions.
Day 2: May 29 - Read Trade Issue Brief http://www.globalization101.org/category/issues-in-depth/trade/, and answer questions 1-4.
- Watch http://www.globalization101.org/dr-susan-aaronson-on-trade-and-human-rights/ and respond to questions 5,6.
- Convene with your group to discuss and answer the questions below. These will help you form your pro and con positions for the debate.
Day 3: June 2 - Read Migration Issue Brief: http://www.globalization101.org/category/issues-in-depth/migration/.
- Watch two clips of Dr. Papademetriou’s Ask the Experts interview http://www.globalization101.org/dr-papademetriou-president-of-the-migration-policy-institute-on-international-migration/: and answer these questions.
Day 4: June 4 - Read the World Bank and IMF Issue Brief http://www.globalization101.org/category/issues-in-depth/imfworld-bank/ and answer these questions.
- Research the TPP. What is it? What agreements preceded it? Who is in favor of the agreement? Who is against it? Why?
Day 5: June 9 - Finish your research on the TPP and potential pro and con arguments. Prepare a 3-paragraph position statement for each. Write up your talking points for each (5-7 bullets)

- How can trade improve the quality of life of people around the world?
- Why do you think human rights are not addressed in trade agreements?
- Is this the appropriate place to discuss human rights why/why not? If so, what human rights should be included in trade agreements?
- Do you agree/disagree with Dr. Aaronson’s assumption that the WTO makes it harder for countries to protect human rights at home and abroad?
- Why would it be difficult to add a human rights assessment into trade agreements? What do you think would be the challenges?
